Agatogo

This is called Agatogo. It's a stew made with plantains , other vegetables and some meat. The concept is great, but I'm guessing that the meat is not usually so tough that a human can't chew it, and the gravy usually has more flavor. I was hungry and ate most of it and enjoyed it. The chunks you see are indeed potato and there was very little of the sweet plantain which typifies the dish. I will order it again somewhere else because I have a feeling it could be really delicious. The tiny open air restaurant where we ate charged us a whopping $4 for the meal, and even with the defects, that's a steal.

Here is the street view in front of our apartment complex.

This is the view from the rooftop veranda. The further patio shade on the ground floor is our little garden area for the time being. We're in a temporary apartment because the current tenants in our permanent home are moving out tomorrow.

View from the rooftop in the opposite direction. Tonight, the air was very smokey from wood, cooking fires. We were up on the veranda doing laundry in the free washer, (clothes lines for dryers,) and I heard children playing. I went over to see what they were doing and with the light coming from one of the buildings, I could see that it had a bare concrete floor, and very little furnishing. Yet the children were laughing and playing in unspoiled glee. I wished I could go down and talk to them. But the children tend to be shy of Mzungus, (white people).

When I know some of the families better, I'll post pictures of the adorable little kids in the church.

This street scene is far from the city center. I took it while Elder Bird drove the van and the Cravens and Sister Bird enjoyed the scenery with us. . .and not having to drive. This area was badly damaged by flooding last year ('23). Some of the bridges are still washed out. People with burdens on their heads are common. (There will be many more pictures of this phenomenon to follow.) In the main city center, the streets are modern and beautifully landscaped. The buildings are also modern and clean. More to follow. It's past my bedtime now.
